After my travels this year, I think the meadowlark is becoming one of my favorite birds. They're a pretty common sight in the plains, especially as you travel down smaller country roads, where I often see them perched on fenceposts.
I actually saw this meadowlark at Carhenge, perched on one of the metal sculptures. Meadowlarks aren't as timid as many other birds, so I was able to to get fairly close to it. Meadowlarks are also usually pretty vocal, and this one was no exception. About every 20-30 seconds it would sing its song, then wait and listen for some other meadowlark off in the fields somewhere to respond.
